About
Over the last two years since my husband Trevor was first diagnosed with cancer in his neck we have both been involved with the Mouth Cancer Foundation (MCF) which is a registered charity in England. They have an online support group, provide information for both professionals and the general populace and also offer advice on all sorts of issues related to cancer of the head and neck, or mouth cancer as these are also called. I really don’t know how both Trevor and I would have coped with his situation (with both cancers as it turned out) if not for the love and support from friends made through the forum. It, and they were truly life savers for us and made a terrible road just a bit easier to endure. Each year in September there is a 10km fundraising walk to aid the MCF which is held in Hyde Park, London. As a tribute to Trevor’s inspiration to many people all over the world through the forum, this year I am going to go and take part in the walk. His attitude, friendliness and determination to win the battle he was facing resulted in the establishment of Trev’s International Fan Club! (TIFC). It was all very tongue-in-cheek however the sentiments of the members were sincere and he is sadly missed by many. I will be doing my best to raise funds between now and my departure on 20th September and I will keep you posted on anything that I might be involved in, in case you feel inclined to support me. I have opened an account for donations and will take a bank draft with me to present personally to the founder of the MCF charity, Dr Vinod Joshi. This is a secure account and I have applied for an ABN in order for the usual tax deductions to apply should anyone require it. Alternatively, a website has been set up for donations online. Due to the fees applied on this service for donations outside the UK, I’m not sure this is the way to get the best ‘value’ out of any (Australian) donations. Some people may prefer to donate this way though and I’ll be very grateful for anything and everything you or your friends may feel inclined to donate.

Hi All
It’s very early days with this site and I hope to keep you posted with my progress, be it with fundraising or any exciting news generally.
We, Peta and I are planning a fundraising dinner for Sat 29th August so keep it free and come along if you can ~ finer details to follow.
I am receiving offers of items for an auction so will incorporate that into my fundraising somehow and again, post details. It is also my plan to auction THE WIG! There is a funny story behind the making of the wig Trevor is wearing in his picture on the TIFC link (and all fan club members too!!) It recevied international recognition on a craft website so must try to advise those members as well.
So much to do! I’ll be in touch soon but please feel free to drop a line (submit a comment!) and keep this blog alive.

For anyone who didn’t know Trevor he was the Dogs B***** and i dont expect to ever meet anyone like him again.He embodied the words life,love and family,and he fought the bastard disease to the very last breath.All of this he did with no small help from the wife he adored and stood by him through thick and thin.

Glad you like the website. I was very impressed with the speed of the connection with the links too.
If all I do with this is raise the MCF profile, I’ll be happy but I’ll be really, really, REALLY happy if I can ‘pay back’ even just a little for all that Trevor and I got from the forums.
In a few hours it will be 12 months since I came back on board. We got his second diagnosis tomorrow. What a year!

Hey Deb, This is a wonderful website. Aaron, Peta and yourself have done a fantastic job. The support you gave Trevor over the last couple of years was outstanding. You put everything in your life on hold to give Trevor the best quality of life that was possible. My hat goes off to you. These support groups are fantastic, because they can relate to you and vice versa. Good luck with your fundraising and look forward to seeing some photos of your walk……

Well here’s hoping we’ve made some progress with this whole response thingy!
As I have said, if the only thing I do with this blog and my whole ‘crusade’ is raise one person’s awareness of head and neck or mouth cancers, then I’ll be very happy. That being said though, mate I’ll be even happier if I raise a bucketload of cash as well!!
Thank you to you and Jahna for the offer of a fundraiser over there in the west. What have you planned? Can’t wait to hear.

Hi Debs ………..what a wonderful site and tribute to Trev………good jog you all did. I became widowed at age 41 (many moons ago) and I became like the Energizer Bunny and just kept going and going keeping busy all the time. Just take time for yourself and smell those flowers. How nice of you to drop in and take a look. Don’t make it a one off thing though because I hope to be able to update with information, pictures of auction items for the fundraiser and anything else I can think of that might get some interest going!
The ‘your comment is awaiting moderation’ issue has something to do with me needing to approve your post. Each time someone enters a comment I think it goes into hold mode until I give it a tick of approval. I hadn’t even seen your first post when the second popped up. Never mind, we’ll get there in the end.
I don’t think there’s much chance of me ever becoming an Energizer Bunny lookalike! Do they have Energizer Elephants? I just feel driven to do all this for some reason and I’m happy to go with the flow. I have been out giving Trevor’s bulbs a good sniff today. They smell beautiful. Will we catch up at the walk, Joan? Or maybe before or after? Angie (bless her) is being my social secretary and she’d love to hear from anyone who would like to catch up.

The first jonquil has been flowering since last week and another opened on Sunday. New life. How lovely.
It’s funny because I went back to work last week as you know, and it feels like a new beginning for me too. There is something bigger at work here….. quite strange. I feel as though I’m just being carried along with little control over when and how I go. It’s not a bad thing!
Hope you’re fine. Thanks for ‘dropping in’ again to my blog. There will be updates on various things, pictures added etc as I get my head around things.
I’m going to start selling handbags, jewellery and fashion accessories at the end of the month to fund my crusade. There’s lots on the go at present.

Bell what a darlin’ you are! As if you haven’t got enough on your plate without taking the time to drop in a comment. I really appreciate it.
I am putting everything into this ‘crusade’. I’ve said it before but I really do feel that I am just being taken along on a ride that is meant to be. It would mean so much to Trevor to know I was giving someting back to everyone who travelled that horrid road with us and cared and supported us every inch of the way. You know exactly what I’m talking about so you will understand where I’m coming from. I feel that when I have done this, there will be other things for me to do but I will be able to lay Tricky Trev’s thread to rest and be satisfied for my efforts.
Talking about burning out! I think I’ll be falling on that plane and dropping into unconsciousness til I arrive in London! So much to do and the time is flying by. I have much organising to do. We’ll get there though ~ everything is very laid back and stress-free (if I say that often enough ~ I’ll believe it!)

Sue, I made a BIG mistake in the calculation of numbers of sleeps til I leave ~ it’s only 58!!!!!!!!!! Ey yi yi. Don’t worry about the boots being made for walking ~ what about the body? The poor, poor knees and bung hips?? Yeeoww. Let’s not go overboard on the whole memory thing ………… There are some beauties, aren’t there. We sure have had some good times together ~ lots of lovin’ and lots AND lots of laughing! What a lovely friendship we’ve shared all these years. It’s just great.

I am sure they will remember the wig, it was a great hit when posted and even became a featured item for a month and won in it’s category for the year as well. It was still high up in the posts so has been viewed regularly but last post was Dec 08. Do you think that ebay might be a better option, I think some people would feel more secure placing a bid on there rather than through the blog. Let me know either way and I will get back to the craftster site and let them know.

What a great surprise to hear from you. It’s lovely to know you’ve taken the time to drop in on my blog and thank you so much,love for you lovely words. It means a lot to me to be doing this in Trevor’s memory. He’d be rapt to know he was half way famous! I can assure you, I’m not so strong (I’ve spent the last two days in tears!!) but having a purpose has perhaps helped me to deal a bit better with Trevor’s passing. It just feels like the right thing to do. When I commit to doing something I like to see it through to the end so that is what drives me. If you would like to donate or even buy a shirt ~ I can’t decide on a colour! You only have to click on the links here and it will give you details.

It’s very kind of you to offer though and of course, if it’s what you really want to do then all items would be gratefully received. When I ran into you at Coles I was shocked to hear about Trevor. Often said to Robert we need to make the time for a BBQ with you guys, but life just seems to fly by. I am so sorry for your loss. I had no idea what to expect when you mentioned a “blog” I know dumb baby boomer. Anyway as you can see I have explored it. Just like you to turn your sadness into a positive. Just great. I will have to get Robert to help me with the donation thing, so that will have to wait until the weekend. I was thinking of sending flowers but the donation is probably better. I hope it all works out in the UK, and you achieve what you have set out to achieve and get to have a ball.

What a lovely surprise to hear from you! Actually your email brought on the water works. You know, it’s very sad that it takes a major trauma and/or loss in one’s life to make you appreciate the here and now. It’s OK to plan for the tomorrow’s but hey! they don’t always come so it’s best to love yourself silly and make the most of every minute of every day because the truth is, you just may not get another one!
Most people I’ve mentioned my ‘blog’ to give me the same empty look that you did when I mentioned it to you. Tee hee. It’s all very new to me as well and thankfully Peta is very clever (and patient) or I wouldn’t have been able to do this. It’s very important to me not just for the sake of Trevor’s memory but also for the gratitude we both feel/felt for the existence of the MCF. What’s the chance of you getting to my dinner on the 29th August? I will drop an invitation in the post anyway and you can see how it works for you.

I figured you wouldn’t be able to make it over for the 29th Bec, but wanted to let you know we’d love you all to be here (as I’m sure you know anyway). I’m still up in the air re the auction. I’m thinking to put at least one ~ the Jennifer Barnett original drawing, on ebay and have it finish at say 9.30pm on the 29th. That way, anyone ‘out there’ can be bidding as can anyone who is actually here ( I think). Can more than one person be bidding from the one email address? I don’ t understand how it all works and will be calling on my niece, or anyone who can help me out in this regard. The only other way I can think of is to get the pictures up on this blog and then perhaps if anyone wants to bid on something, they can let me know what they are prepared to go to on any particular item and I can keep placing their bids. I have had some lovely things donated and then some simple, little things which are just space fillers and for smaller bids so there’s something for everyone and should be fun. I have run my auctions like this at the last two Biggest Morning Teas and they went down well. Here’s hoping. Do you have any ideas of what items you would like to bid upon?????????? Could it be that beautiful drawing? A quilt? Some Banrock Station wines? Or maybe a very nice handbag would be more to your liking………………. carrier bags for wine bottles all ready for a Christmas present? Books? The list goes on …………..
You’re right Bec, Trevor would be proud however I think it would be just as easy to be proud from the comfort of his own home and I’d appreciate it very much if he’d get himself back here and pitch in to help!

What a fantastic, successful, fun time we had on Saturday night! I am so blessed with the wonderful, supportive friends I have and once again they all came to the fore and supported my fundraiser. It was just great. I was blown away and very relieved there was no blood shed over the auction! It was so funny to watch (usually) placid and friendly people teetering on the brink of violence to protect their precious lots as things hotted up and the countdown began for the close off of the auction. Just terrific.
The amount raised was staggering but I don’t want to reveal that just yet, and maybe not until after I have presented my cheque to the good Dr Joshi on September 26th! I want it to be a surprise.
How did your show end up Pam? We had the Gawler show on the weekend also and as usuall threatened to flood on the first day. Great that the weather picked up yesterday ~ cold but sunny.

It’s going to get really exciting now with only 19 sleeps to go. I don’t even have a suitcase at this point!!!! Oh well ~ if I’m totally knackered on the 20th, maybe I’ll sleep the flight away ……

I have eventually found the link and am looking forward to meeting you on the 26th. Havent got my tshirt yet or offically joined your team – that is all a bit too organised for me, but I am intending to be there!
I would have loved to have been able to host you while you are here but Chaz still gets upset with what he perceives to be my continued unhelathy obsession with his cancer, so I am afraid don’t feel I can. I am sorry about that.
It sounds as if you are doing remarkably I must say. What a brave woman you are. You must be missing Trevor terribly, but I suspect thoughts about heading over here in 15 sleeps are probably helping. Very exciting!

Welcome to my blog! Lovely to find you here just now. My friend has just loaned me a suitcase. She convinced me that buying a new one to travel overseas is not a good idea due to the bashing it will get! My luggage is either too big or not big enough and because I’m not tripping off O/S every other week, it does seem silly to get a new case.
I’m so glad we’ll get to catch up and thank you for the ‘otherwise’ offer of accommdation. Very kind of you. I don’t know that I’m any braver than anyone else we know who has been down this horrid path, Cathy. I am so committed to this trip in Trevor’s memory and honour that it all just feels ‘right’. Maybe I’ll come unstuck when I get back home but being able to say ‘hello’ in person to our wonderful online ‘family’ and being able to hand over some Aussie funds as a thank you to Vinod will be very satisfying and fulfilling. Trevor and I were both very lucky (in a very unlucky kind of way) that we had the time, knowing there was not a lot of time, to make the most of every day. You’ve heard me say it all before but we really had a good thing going on and it just got stronger and stronger and that’s pretty special. I’m grateful we were able to say and do all we wanted and needed to say and do. Our last two years were very precious. Sad, but precious.
That’s all pretty heavy! Sorry about that!
Yes! I can’t believe that when I go to work on Monday, I’ll only have 10 working days left. I’m getting very nervous but also very excited. I’ll have to get on top of my packing (or at least any shopping for my packing) over the weekend because it’s the last chance I’ll get. Once the packing is under control, I’ll be much more relaxed!
Have you been in touch with Angie? Are we able to get together other than at the walk? I hope so. Get Chaz out on that bike of his and reassure him the conversation won’t be morbid and based on cancer stories!
I’m really looking forward to seeing you soon.

Here Iam at last.
Pat has hade the op and came home last Wed but was taken back in
yesterday with a mini stroke I forget what you call it but you will know.
He is ok and back home now. A bit of a scare to say the least.
Sorry about being so slack I will ring you before you leave. Malcolm and family arrive the day you leave for the UK.

Tonight is my last sleep under my own roof so it’s all very real now. What if no-one likes me and I find myself on the streets of London (good name for a song), abandoned and alone and, and, and ………….

You are fabulous and the overseas people will love you to bits. Did you get in touch with the ‘five W’ thingo? or did you actually never get that message?

Just wanted to wish you bon voyage and good luck for the walk (although I’m not too sure about those high heeled trainers!). Would have loved to have met up with you but we will be on safari in Kenya at the time. Since Robert’s diagnosis we’ve been determined that we’re going to see and do as much as possible, which is something positive that we’ve been able to take from our experience with this awful disease. The weather here is unusually warm so I hope you have a lovely day for the walk and a fabulous trip in all.
Watch out for those squirrels in Hyde Park!

Great to hear from you and just terrific to hear from people with like minds. Anyone who doesn’t get the ‘make the most of every single moment’ message when faced with, or having faced cancer, just doesn’t ‘get it’ generally in my book. Time is gone soon enough and death leaves a huge gap so the memories and satisfaction you build and ‘earn’ in the process of the disease, helps to tide you over the rough patches in it’s wake. Go the two of you ~ and Kenya no less! Great.
I loved your little squirrel quip. There were some good chuckles over the whole squirrel ‘discussions’, weren’t there? Tee hee. I’ll have my own little fella to keep me safe from the wild ones!
Here’s hoping your travels bring you Down Under at some stage. Always a bed at my place.

Hi, Waiting for your first post from London. Hope the flight was fun. We had a monster red dust storm on Wednesday and I’m still cleaning up here and am going to my house shortly. Even though it was completely closed up I noticed when I called in that there is a layer or rusty dust everywhere. Shades of Denial Bay!! Good luck with the Walkathon.
